Adoption Process

We use a three stage adoption process to ensure ferrets and families are well matched.  The first step is an application form, then telephone interview and finally a virtual home visit. This process allows us to gauge ferret knowledge and help point out various issues that might come up with ferret ownership.

Foster to Adopt

Not sure if a ferret is right for you?

Try our Foster-to-Adopt program.  Take a ferret in for 30 days, along with guidance from our experts, some loaner equipment (cage, toys, etc) and see if a ferret a great fit in your home before making the commitment.

Raw Fed

A raw food diet is essential to not only a ferret's long term health but also their day to day well being and, of course, their "smell" - with raw fed ferrets having a drastically lower smell then kibble fed ferrets. Ferrets in VI FERT’s care are transitioned to a balanced raw diet before being adopted.

Health Checks

All ferrets undergo a two week quarantine where they are assessed for health and behaviour issues.  They then get a general health screening by one of our ferret friendly veterinarians before being made available for adoption. For ferrets in need of serious care, treatment is provided for all that is reasonable and humane. Any ferret that is deemed too ill to be adopted out stays in one of our specially trained palliative foster homes.

Bonded

VI FERT never separates bonded ferrets.  It is cruel to do so. That is why you’ll find groups of two, three or four in our Residents section. Ferrets are highly sociable creatures.
